BOOK REVIEWS:
THE SCARLET SHROUD - "The Scarlet Shroud is cut from the same mold as the Shadow or the Spider... in other words, he's a colorful vigilante who encounters villains bent on world (or at least city) domination. The interior art (there are quite a few pieces) really captures the mood and the writing is crisp and manages to both capture the feel of the old-time pulps while taking on the more modern qualities that readers of today need. If you're wondering where the classic heroes of the past have gone, try this one -- it's a brand-new character that will immediately make you feel like you've know them for years."
- Barry Reese
ROTATIONAL ASSIGNMENT - "Novelist and Research Chemist, Dr. Richard K. Lyon, died November 21, 2008 in his Fargo, North Dakota home surrounded by his family.
Born December 22, 1933, Lyon was a graduate of William and Mary and received his PHD in physical chemistry from Harvard. He had a lengthy career in chemistry and he was responsible for many scientific publications and patents for various chemical processes. This included the Thermal DeNox process, a technology which removes pollutants from smoke stack emissions. His contributions to pollution control and alternative energy are used throughout the world. He was honored with many awards, including the ACS award and the IR 100.
Lyon was a Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America member whose first fiction sale was the short story, "The City of Ul Chalan," which appeared in Analog in 1973. With Andrew J. Offutt, he wrote 4 novels, starting with Demon in the Mirror which was published in 1977. His single author collection, "Tales from the Lyonheart", was published in 2007 by Wild Cat Books.
The very talented Mr. Lyon passed away one month before the new edition's release, and so he never got to see the final result.
We'll miss you, Richard, but your stories will live on!"
- Ron Hanna
UNDER THE SUNS OF ANTARES - "If you are looking for Planetary Romance, Sword & Sorcery, Science Fiction, Fantasy... Call it what you will; ADVENTURE IS BACK! For now, written in the true Burroughs, Howard and Bulmer tradition, you can visit the fictional but plausible worlds of Tim Jones.
Experience elation, tragedy, romance, war, and much more..."
- Ron Hanna
TALES OF THE NORSE GODS - "Finally someone did something with the Norse Gods other than Marvel's Thor series. Very well done and a very fast read to boot, Wild Cat Books has hit the nail on the head with this anthology. Representing original takes on the old Norse Gods, Odin, Thor, Loki, Hel, this is an engrossing and interesting book. It has some very dark moments and some lighter (revolving around Thor) ones.
The story that grabbed me the most was THE PASSING OF THE GOD'S, where an old Norseman, loyal to his ancestral ways, meets his gods as they are driven off from this plane of reality by the Christian God, who doesn't want any competition it seems. The reader can feel the main characters pain as he rails against the weakness of his people in abandoning the old ways. A fine book, I recommend it to all interested in Norse mythology."
